The young French artist Mallika Morin was born in 1990 in the small village of Luçay-le-Mâle, located approximately 170 kilometers south of Paris, France.
There is an extraordinary mystery hidden even in the artist’s name. In ancient Indian mythology, “Malika” means a small white flower resembling jasmine. In Arabic, the name translates as “queen.”
Mallika grew up in a quintessential French countryside setting. Her childhood was spent on a family estate with a garden filled with fruit trees and small agricultural fields, where her father grew various vegetables and grains. The refined elegance and understated beauty of the French Provençal style surrounded Mallika from an early age.
She would wander barefoot through the meadows, sometimes helping her father in the garden, and at other times learning from her mother how to make traditional plum jam and the famous tomato sauces flavored with basil and fragrant Provençal herbs.
To be perfectly honest, as a child Mallika was a real tomboy. She loved climbing trees, setting off on long adventures into the woods, and had absolutely no idea what Disneyland Paris was.
But throughout her childhood, one thing remained constant: Mallika loved to draw. She possessed an exceptionally refined sense of taste and was remarkably demanding of herself. This perfectionism remains an essential part of her character as an artist today. She prefers to continue working on a painting until it reaches a level of completeness and perfection that only she herself can define.
Mallika also discovered an exceptional aptitude for languages.
After graduating from secondary school, Mallika moved to Paris to study at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts (ENSBA), one of the most renowned and prestigious art schools in France. Its history dates back to the establishment of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, and later Architecture, under Louis XIV.
There, she received a rigorous academic education, but ultimately discovered her own distinctive style and unique technique through contemporary impasto painting.
Her exhibition career began during her student years. She exhibited at the Grande Halle de la Villette as well as at the Carrousel du Louvre exhibition center in Paris.
Despite the obvious success she experienced during that period, Mallika recalls those years of her life with mixed feelings. Leaving the beloved French countryside behind, she felt, as she herself puts it, that she had left a piece of her heart there. The beauty, glamour and sophistication of metropolitan life could not fill the void created by that separation.
For Mallika, the memory of the French countryside remained deeply rooted in her artistic identity — in the colors, textures, light and atmosphere that continue to find their way onto her canvases.
